Nature's Remedies at Your Fingertips
Chinese herbal medicine is based on the idea that natural substances—mainly plants but also animals and minerals—carry distinct healing properties rooted in their “character” (cold, hot, warm, cool) and “flavor” (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty). These qualities are observed through their effects on the body: for example, ginger warms and promotes sweating, while watermelon cools and relieves heat. Over centuries, Chinese medicine has categorized herbs according to Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, using their biased properties to rebalance bodily disorders.
The “character” of herbs helps regulate the body’s cold–heat balance: cool and cold herbs calm excessive heat and metabolism, while warm and hot herbs stimulate circulation and organ activity. Their “flavor” also directs healing—pungent herbs, like mustard, open and disperse, while other flavors have their own targeted effects. Together, the interplay of character and flavor explains how herbs act as natural medicines, with remedies like ginger, onion, and tangerine peel tea effectively treating colds by warming the body and dispelling chill.
